The Series-A was designed to be our ‘go-to’ lab notebook, with the best combination of price, features, and performance -coupled with a sleek and refined look and feel.
LAY FLAT BINDING
Binding, paper weight and grain direction have been maximized to make the pages lay as flat as possible for this type of book.
Specialized binding protects the spine from damage, specialized coating protects the cover from spills and tears, and extra durable adhesive keeps the book intact .
Considerably thicker than standard lab notebook paper, very minimal ink bleed through, and acid-free for archival qualities.
With 9.25″ x 11.75″ pages you can easily paste or tape in printed protocols or results and still have ample space for notes.
The Series-A lays more and more flat with use. To accelerate this process flex the book open and closed every few pages before your initial use, unlike tape binding this will not affect the integrity of the binding and will allow the book to lay significantly more flat.
The cover accepts ink for labeling; however we have found some heavy inks smear, test your pen in an inconspicuous section of the cover before labeling.

Elegant, Clean, and Nearly Indestructible.
I write a lot, and I use all types of pens: Fountain, Gel, Ball point. I however don’t often write in pencil so my perspective on this comes purely from an ink-to-paper point of view, but this is some the most even writing paper I’ve ever used – bleed through is not a problem or even a concern.I also often find myself opting for smaller notebooks, because I’m always on the go I tend to destroy anything in an 11×8 or similar format. This habit is actually why I was almost put off by these books – however I’ve found them to be nearly indestructible. I even tried to rip it apart without much success. This was huge for me because I can’t tell you how many notebooks I’ve ended up pitching after the spiral binding was squashed beyond use or the spine simply shredded. I’m certain a phone book made love to a leather tome one night. That’s the only way I can describe this notebook. Even with that in mind, it’s not particularly flashy- neat and tidy around the edges but no frills needed. I appreciate when a tool does it’s job well, and doesn’t feel the need to tell everyone what a great tool it is.The only thing I’d like to see, is smaller formats. Something that fits in your pocket or such.

Tactually impressive notebook.
I have all but given up on physical notebooks, but I thought that it’d be prudent to give it another go as I’m tackling a large research project and Evernote doesn’t really cut it. I’ve used Moleskines previously, and in comparison this notebook is superior in build and paper quality. This’d be my pick if I were in a wet lab everyday. These are initial impressions, however. From what I’ve been able to glean from Google searches, books that are bound using otabind exhibit similar durability to those with thread sewn binding. We’ll see. I’ll update this review in a year.I only wish I had the disposable income to stock up on these. I look forward to seeing what else VELA comes up with in the future.EDIT: One year later, the notebook is in excellent shape. There is some fraying at the corners of its cover, but the binding is still intact. I stand by the original review.
