The Sportsman Propane 4000 Watt Portable Generator can power common household appliances and power tools. It is equipped with two -120 volt outlets and a 12 volt DC outlet for battery charging. A generator of this size is ideal for small camping or tailgating parties or to have on hand in case you need some temporary power in an emergency situation. It has a 7HP 4-Stroke OHV Recoil Start engine. Its affordable but well thought out with full featured options such as Automatic Low Oil Shutdown and Automatic Voltage Regulator. It boasts an engine run time of 10 hours at 50% on a common 20Lb (gas grill type) cylinder (LPG cylinder not included). A 5 foot propane fuel hose with a regulator is included for your added convenience. The engine is surprisingly quiet; it runs at less than 68 Db. This is a great generator for anyone who needs affordable power. Propane has several distinct advantages over gas generators. Propane burns cleaner than gas engines. Carbon monoxide emissions run up to 40% lower. Propane will not degrade, so you can keep several propane tanks on hand for emergencies and store them for an unlimited amount of time. Since this generator runs on propane you never have to worry about the fuel going bad or having the carburetor getting fouled due to degenerated gas – a common problem with gas powered small engines. Unfortunately, this model cannot be converted to operate with natural gas. 4000 surge watts/3250 running watts Uses a standard gas grill style LPG tank The 7 HP, 4 stroke OHV, recoil start engine, delivers maximum performance The generator runs on clean, quiet and efficient liquid propane gas (LPG), so you never have to worry about bad gas fouling the engine 5 ft. Offers great flexibility but…
By M. McEnery
We purchased this generator to power a sump pump at a building that has no electricity. Having a generator that runs on propane allows it to run for much longer than typical gas generators. Cost of operation is about the same as gas generators as best as we can tell. The only problem experienced to date is we have had difficulty getting it started. We changed the spark plug and that has helped somewhat, but we still have to use ether to get it started most of the time. We are waiting on Buffalo Tools to get us the local service repair shop so we can bring it in for warranty repair. Unit is just 2 weeks old.

Received generator two days after I ordered. Very fast shipping! Unpacked it, put in the oil, hooked up the propane, choked the carburetor, and pulled three times before I remembered to turn the valve on the gas tank. Fired right off the first time after that. Subsequent starts were just as easy. One pull only. It ran my saws and drills with no problems. I hope it lasts, because the engine manufacturer is unknown to me, and I know nothing about the valves, bearings, etc. So far, though, it has been a really sweet little generator.

Works well; good service after sale; a few minor design issues
This may all be moot, since this generator apparently is no longer available, but here goes anyway:Took delivery today, put oil in, connected propane, etc.; engine started on 5th or 6th pull. Verified that it was generating 120V AC & 12V DC. Second time, it started on the first pull. Everything seems to be working as advertised. Some of the materials used in this generator are not as sturdy as one would like. The air filter cover is made of cheap plastic & was badly cracked when it arrived. The clips that hold the air filter cover in place are flimsy, made of wire about the same gauge as a paper clip. As at least one other reviewer has noted, the choke lever is plastic & feels very flimsy. I handle it gingerly for fear that I will break it.The oil filler opening is placed very low, tucked under the power panel. Putting in oil is a pain. A funnel with a narrow tube at least 6-8 inches long is required. The pull cord location is a little awkward, too, & I don’t even want to think about taking out the spark plug.Bottom line: If this generator lasts, it will be worth the $390 I paid for it. It has some bothersome design features, & some parts could have been made of sturdier materials.UPDATE 9/14/11: I contacted Buffalo Tools about the broken air cleaner cover. They asked me to fax my receipt to them. I didn’t exactly have a receipt as such, so I faxed my Amazon order & the packing slip, with a cover page asking for a new cover. They sent not only a new cover but a whole new air cleaner. A big thumbs-up to Buffalo Tools for responding in a more-than-satisfactory manner to my problem.UPDATE 7/7/12: I recently had occasion to use this generator in a power outage. After having been stored in a shed for more than 10 months, it started on the first pull (after I remembered to turn on the gas) & ran for 8 hours without missing a beat. There was still propane left in the tank when I shut it down. Even though it isn’t big enough to run our AC, this generator kept our refrigerator & other essential devices running, which made it a LOT easier to get through the outage. Lessons learned from this experience: (1) Buy a wheeled cart for this generator. It has no wheels & moving it around is a real drag, literally. (2) Keep a spare tank of propane on hand. We didn’t need it this time, but if we had we would have been out of luck, as the local stores sold out of propane quickly.
